Since people are busy and puppies develop so fast, I have designed a series of six classes that can be taken in any order. New people with puppies don’t have to wait for a new class to begin. They can join in at anytime once they have taken an orientation class. If you miss a class or two, you can make it up any time it is taught again, within 10 weeks. If you wish to repeat one or more classes, you may do so at a discounted drop in rate as long as there is space available that week. Please call me or email me to let me know if you won’t be able to make it to a class. There may be someone needing to make up a class who can use your spot.
Important skills like attention, polite greetings, hand targeting and accepting being handled will be presented every class. The puppies will be able to socialize every class.
Many important behaviors and concepts will be repeated throughout the class so don’t worry if you missed something in class, it will most likely be repeated. Dogs and people learn better when they can review and practice a skill several times.
Bring your puppy on a regular 6’ leash (no flexi leads) and flat collar or harness. Make sure your puppy has not had a huge meal right before class and isn’t too tired. We will be feeding them in class so if your puppy is slightly hungry it makes training easier. You may also bring a favorite toy or chew item (kongs are good) to help motivate your dog or keep its attention.
Please let us know if your puppy is on a special diet, or is uncomfortable with any exercises. If you don’t want your puppy to learn a behavior, or if your puppy has any other issues just let us know (and keep reminding us if necessary.) We want you and your puppy to be relaxed and comfortable so that you will both have fun learning together.
Keep in mind that all dogs and people learn at their own pace. As long as you and your dog are learning and having fun together, you are successfully training. Training is an ongoing life-long process that can enhance your relationship and communication with your dog. Enjoy the process as much as you enjoy reaching your training goals.
Please read the first 80 pages in our class book “Click ’n Connect”. Pay close attention to the section on socialization on page 70. Make sure your puppy has lots of positive experiences by the time he is 16-20 weeks old. There will be reading assignments as well as homework each week for you to practice.
